SYNOPSIS
REGINA is an 80-minute documentary about the life and art of actress Regina Vogue, 81, one of the great pioneers of Brazilian theater. Running away from home as a young girl to pursue her dream of becoming an artist, first with a poor traveling circus, she dared to breathe fire, hang by her hair, until a fateful accident occurred: Regina was bitten by a monkey and abandoned on the road by the circus owner. She resumed her search, this time as a bullfighter in a bullfighting circus, until finally finding her home in the theater. Regina’s life is marked by challenges, always sustained by imagination and fantasy. Today, even while living with major physical limitations, she remains active and inspiring, keeping her own theater — founded in 2004 in southern Brazil — running.
The film presents three narrative layers: a fictional and fantastical one, which retells her story with poetic and theatrical language, staged in her own theater; a documentary layer, which follows her final performances, in which she presents a monologue in various cities and reunites with old friends; and, finally, a layer of archives and interviews about women of Latin American theater in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, who faced heavy prejudice, were called prostitutes, and were often rejected by their families.
Inspired by works such as I’m Not There and The Beaches of Agnès, the film intertwines reality and invention to reveal the resilient soul of an artist who continues walking “one step on the earth and two in the sky”.
